Dragonnades (The)

Persecution of the Protestants – during the reign of Louis XVI – consisting of boarding the king’s soldiers (dragoons) in protestant homes in order to obtain their conversion. The dragoons were authorised to use every method of pressure in order to get their hosts’ to abjure. Such procedures, already used in Bohemia since 1627, were legalized in France by Louvois in 1661.
