The Church of Saint Nicolas

In the Autumn of 1538 Jean Calvin started preaching in Strasbourg at the Church of Saint Nicolas.

Pastor of the parish, Jean Marbach enforced Lutheran orthodoxy to in Strasbourg early in the second half of the 16th century. The choir was rebuilt in 1905. The interior contains traces of frescoes, a beautiful Renaissance pulpit and a gallery awaiting restoration.

In the early 20th century a young pastor Albert Schweitzer was a vicar until he left for Lambaréné in 1913.

On 11 April 1908 he blessed the wedding of Théodor Heuss, President of the Federal German Republic to be, with the journalist Elly Knapp. He also played many of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works at the organ.
